Understanding Hearing Assessments

What is a hearing (audiometry) assessment?

In the UK, there are around 11 million people with hearing loss. If you think that you may be suffering from hearing loss or are struggling to hear certain pitches or frequencies, we recommend having an audiometry assessment. An audiometry or hearing assessment is designed to identify hearing problems and to evaluate whether hearing aids or surgery may improve one’s hearing.

What does a hearing assessment include?

Audiometry is a procedure used to establish hearing acuity across different frequencies (pitches). This procedure will help establish the severity of hearing loss and the type of hearing loss.

  • Ear Examination (Otoscopy)
    Visual inspection of the outer ear canal and eardrum. This helps check the health of the ear canal and eardrum and rule out any contraindications for further assessment.
  • Pure Tone Audiometry
    Tones (pure tones) will be presented through headphones and minimal response levels will be established (softest sounds the person can hear) across several frequencies (pitches). This will show if the person has a hearing loss and the severity of the hearing loss.
  • Bone Conduction Assessment
    Tones are presented via a bone vibrator which is kept behind the ear. This test will help confirm the type of hearing loss
  • Uncomfortable Loudness Levels
    The purpose of this assessment is to establish the loudest levels of sounds a person can comfortably tolerate. UCL is used when programming hearing aids.

How do I know if I need a hearing test?

There are three common types of hearing loss: Conductive, involving the outer or middle ear, Sensorineural, involving the inner ear, or Mixed, which is a combination of the two. Symptoms of hearing loss may include:

  • Muffling of speech and other sounds.
  • Trouble understanding words, especially when in a crowd or a noisy place.
  • Trouble hearing the letters of the alphabet that aren’t vowels.
  • Often asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.
  • Needing to turn up the volume of the television or radio.
  • Avoiding some social settings.
  • Being affected by background noise.
  • Ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus.

Q: How do you prepare for a hearing test?

A: No special preparation is needed for an audiometry test.

Q: How does it feel during an audiometry assessment?

A: During an audiometry test, you will not feel any discomfort. Audiometry assessment length will vary. We can provide you with more information when you book your assessment.

Q: Are there any risks involved in an audiometry exam?

A: Audiometry is non-invasive and carries no risks.

Q: What do abnormal results mean?

A: Audiometry assessment results are displayed on a graph (audiogram). We will review your results and, if hearing loss is confirmed, management and treatment techniques will be discussed. These could include wearing a hearing aid.

Q: Is all hearing loss permanent?

A: As mentioned above, there are three types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural and mixed. Conductive hearing loss may caused by a blockage or infection which prevents sound from travelling to the inner ear. This type of hearing loss usually is not permanent. Sensorineural loss is caused by nerve damage and is permanent. Mixed is a combination of conductive and sensorineural loss.
