Understanding Earwax

What is ear wax?

Earwax or “cerumen” is produced by the skin glands in the outer ear canal and normally migrates outwards. While you may not think about ear wax too much, it is essential to your ear health. Here are some of the protective qualities that ear wax delivers:

  • Anti-Bacterial
Thanks to its sticky texture, ear wax prevents bacteria and germs from penetrating the ear. Without ear wax, your ears could become infected and damaged.
  • Maintains pH
Ear wax is responsible for lubricating the skin and maintaining the ear’s natural pH balance. The right pH levels serve to prevent dryness and irritation as well as possible infection.
  • Self-Cleaning Properties
Did you know that your ear wax acts as an in-built cleaning service for your ears? By preventing bacteria or dirt from taking hold, ear wax cleans as it goes.
  • Insect Repellent
The thought of an insect intruding into your ear is awful. Fortunately, ear wax acts as a natural insect repellent.

Though ear wax is naturally occurring and necessary for ear health, an excess of it can cause significant problems that can impact your life. But what causes excess ear wax and what are the symptoms?

What causes excess ear wax?

Your body is a medical marvel and can naturally mediate the right levels of ear wax to protect the ear. However, ear wax production can sometimes go awry for several reasons including:

  • Excessive headphone use or if you wear hearing aids.
  • Narrow ear canals.
  • Skin conditions.
  • Ear infections.
  • Environmental conditions (dusty or dirty areas).
  • Genetics, age and lifestyle.
  • Use of cotton buds.

If you think you may have excess ear wax, there are some warning signs that you can look for.

What are the symptoms of earwax build-up?

The symptoms of excess ear wax can easily be identified. Here are some of the symptoms of ear wax build-up:

  • Blocked ears.
  • Earache.
  • Fullness in the ear.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Tinnitus(ringing or buzzing sounds in ears).
  • Dizziness.
  • Itchy ears.
  • Infections.

For hearing aid wearers it can cause:

  • Damage or a need for frequent cleaning of the hearing aid.
  • Discomfort or poor fitting of a hearing aid.
  • Hearing aids make a whistling noise.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it’s important to book an appointment so a specialist can advise on the next steps. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

Looking After Your Ear Health | FAQs

Q: Can I use cotton buds to clean my ears?

A: Your ear canals are self-cleaning and should not be cleaned using cotton buds, hair pins, paper clips or any other item.

Q: What are the risks of ear micro-suctioning?

A: Risks of micro-suctioning could include incomplete clearance, dizziness, cough, grazing of the ear canal, worsening of pre-existing chronic tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and eardrum perforation.

Q: What are the risks of ear irrigation?

A: Ear irrigation can cause injury to ears, including minor infection, acute and chronic tinnitus and perforation of the eardrum. If you had ear surgery or have had a perforated eardrum/ear discharge recently, you must tell us before syringing as this may mean we can’t syringe your ears.

Q: What do I need to do before my appointment?

A: We recommend softening your ear wax in the 5 days before your appointment. To do this, you can use medicated oil drops, or a spray such as Earol, once per day and repeat for 5 days.

Q: What happens if earwax is not removed?

A: If excess ear wax is not removed, you could face further problems caused by impacted ear wax.

Q: How should you clean your ears safely?

Your ears have self-cleaning properties and should produce enough ear wax to prevent problems.
